Bombs as we will discuss them have really only been around since the advent of the airplane. Back then, the first bombs were essentially hand grenades dropped by the pilot on unsuspecting ground troops. Eventually specialized aircraft bombs were developed, with stabilizing fins and fuzes which could explode on contact or at specific altitudes. Then, in WWII, the Germans developed the first guided bomb, the Ruhrstahl Fritz-X, which was used operationally with some effectiveness. Since then bombs have become more and more versatile, carrying a wide variety of warheads, from smoke to nuclear.
